Art has always been a passion of mine and has never disappointed me in its pursuit. The sensual joy of playing with mixtures of color, brushing on a thick impasto of paint, smelling the sharp tang of turpentine in the studio, even losing the sense of time passing and the pleasure of working on a piece are only some of the rewards of art for me. Art is fun and joyous for me.
When I first discovered the late paper works of Matisse at the Orangerie in Paris I was delighted by the power his strong shapes and colors and the shear brio and playfulness of his oeuvre. The works were huge and beguiling and yet were of delicate paper hung on the walls from floor to ceiling. Later, when I first visited the Paris Musee Marmottan in Paris, the late works of Monet were housed in the dimly lit lower floor basement. In this shadowy setting the paintings of his garden in Giverny blazed like torches. Monet’s thick ropes of paint application, the writhing willow branches over water lilies skimming the broken surface of his pond, had both a visual and a visceral effect on me. I felt I could almost taste the colors which were glowing like jewels.
If my own work captures the restless playfulness, bold colors and mark making of these and other artists I feel that my work is a success. I also wish to gratefully acknowledge some of the gifted teachers that I have learned from over the years.
